What Are Crypto Liquidations?

When traders use leverage (borrowing to amplify their position size), exchanges require them to maintain a minimum margin. If the price moves against the position enough to breach this margin requirement, the exchange forcibly closes the position — this is called a liquidation.

For example, a trader using 10x leverage on a Bitcoin long position only needs the price to drop ~10% before their entire position is liquidated.

Why Liquidations Are Critical Market Signals

Cascading Effect

Mass liquidations push the price further in the same direction, triggering more liquidations — creating volatile chain reactions.

Reversal Signals

Extreme liquidation volumes often mark local tops (mass long liquidations) or bottoms (mass short liquidations).

Leverage Insight

High liquidation activity reveals where traders are over-leveraged and where the market is vulnerable to squeezes.

Exchange Analysis

Different exchanges show different leverage patterns. Tracking per-exchange data reveals where risk is concentrated.

How to Read Liquidation Data

  • Long liquidations — Forced closures of buy positions. These happen when prices drop. High volumes of long liquidations during a sell-off can amplify the downward move.
  • Short liquidations — Forced closures of sell positions. These happen when prices rise. A "short squeeze" occurs when rising prices trigger cascading short liquidations, pushing the price up even further.
  • Liquidation clusters — Price levels where many liquidations are concentrated. These act as magnets that the price is drawn toward during volatile moves.
  • Long/short ratio — Shows the balance between bullish and bearish leveraged positions. An extreme imbalance often precedes a move in the opposite direction.
